In pre-school we all used to sit in a circle. And our knees would touch. Most of us would pick our nose, some of us were wearing our clothes inside out and a few of us smelled like urine no matter what. But who minded then? No one really gave two shits. We left our belongings in cubbies, didn’t lock the bathroom door and all caught each other’s illnesses.

Then we started sitting at desks. And looking at people’s butt cracks. Or their thongs. And we didn’t want to touch each other’s knees anymore.

Later we’re sitting on couches. Kissing each other or trying to look attractively bored. Lighting cigarettes, telling lies and touching only a very select number of knees.

After that we’re sleeping in cement cells and throwing up fruit punch on the weekends. Then sometimes sitting at desks again but only looking at paper.

But lastly we’re walking. There’s nothing to sit on or sleep in. There are no butt cracks to stare at or knees to touch. We’ve decided for it to be this way. We had a chance where we all sitting in a circle and not locking doors. But we had to start sitting at desks and lying to each other. But there was a time when everyone’s knees touched.
